I have a really paranoid, really new age-y inkling that octopi are probably smarter than we are. They just don't make sophisticated tools because their environment never incited the adaptation, and they have no way to communicate to us what awful beasts we are. It's like how they think neanderthals were actually smarter than humans but went extinct due to environmental factors and relatively less warlike aggressiveness. Kind of upsetting.
